Garden Office Electrical installation

Our electrical installation costs an estimated £800 and includes consumer unit, four double sockets, a light switch, standard pendant light, armoured cabling from your home to the garden building and safety certificates.

Further sockets, lighting and extras are available at a further cost.

Electrical work may involve several hours of trenchwork where in our estimated costs we allow for 2 hours to dig and backfill the trench and therefore any additonal time spent will be charged at a labour rate of £20 per hour.

Longer cable runs will involve more work and more armoured cabling which may not be included in the original estimate.

On some occasions electrical consumer units or components are out of date and will need replacing at cost price and this may only be confirmed on inspection by a qualified electrician.

(alternative lights can be sourced or supplied for us to fit)

Our electricians will aim to accommodate all your requirements so if you need further sockets or lighting this can be arranged at a discounted rate.

Armoured cable can be surface fixed to immovable objects such as a garden wall/fence but in most cases a trench in excess of 450mm deep is required for the armoured cable.

In some cases armoured cable can be surface mounted all the way to the log cabin but often there is trenchwork involved and this is budgeted into our costs.

In our experience most installations require in the region of 25 metres or more of cable. We do not set a limit and simply charge the cost price of extra cable plus the time taken for any additional trench work.

Adding electrics to your log cabin can be relatively straightforward if the supply required is less than 16amps. In this case the supply can be fed from the ring main ideally from a socket on an adjacent outside wall. In the case of larger supply demands the feed will have to extend back to the main consumer unit which may involve quite a bit more work and disruption.

To make full use of your garden office you will need power installed and to comply with current building regulations part P the following applies:

From 1 January 2005 it is a legal requirement for all work on fixed electrical installations in dwellings and associated buildings to comply with BS 7671: 2008(2011), ‘Requirements for electrical installations’ (The IEE Wiring Regulations 17th Edition).

Where possible we use our own qualified Electrical engineer which we have used several times before. If you would prefer to select your own electrician we can work with them during the first and second fix as we assemble your log cabin.

Our electrician works to the UK national standard, BS 7671, and will issue a safety certificate for their electrical work to confirm that the installation has been designed, constructed, inspected and tested in accordance with the national electrical safety standard, BS 7671 – Requirements for Electrical Installations

Heating your garden office

How to heat your log cabin:

A standalone electric heater or underfloor heating?

For a comfortable steady heat we recommend underfloor heating. The main advantage is you have a much more controllable heat which provides heat where it is most needed.

Most experienced “shedworkers” will tell you the place they feel the cold is in their feet. The reason being standalone heaters may heat the air in your log cabin but this heat will rise and although your head may feel warm your feet will feel cold.

The advantage of underfloor heating

Underfloor heating spreads the heat evenly across the floor and gently warms the room providing the perfect heating method and due to to the efficiency of heating using this system you will find you need to use it less than a standalone heater.

Underfloor heating is controlled by an electronic thermostat which allows you to set both the temperature and the times you would like to heat your log cabin.

Underfloor heating can be added to any of our log cabins. We would recommend combining this with floor insulation to maximise the benefit of this system.

Standalone heaters have the advantage of being cheaper in the first instance and will heat the air in your cabin quite well particularly if you have opted for our insulation package.

However, standalone oil or convector heaters will not direct the heat to where it is most needed and may lead to increased energy bills as you try to warm up your feet!
